Matthew Hanscom (Falke)

Matthew HanscomVocally commanding and dramatically compelling, Matthew Hanscom (Falke) is the resident baritone at Opera San Jose. This past season he portrayed Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Gino Carella in the world premiere of Weiser’s Where Angels Fear to Tread, Taddeo in Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri, and the title role in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Mr. Hanscom has performed with Sarasota Opera for six seasons to high critical acclaim, most recently appearing as Comte de Toulouse in Verdi’s Jérusalem. Highlights from previous seasons include his portrayals of Schaunard in Puccini’s La bohème, Slim in Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men, and Ping in Puccini’s Turandot.

With his rich and expressive voice, Mr. Hanscom has enjoyed success at the highest levels of national and international competition. He was an international finalist in the Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition; a national semifinalist in the Palm Beach Opera Competition, the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; and can be seen in the documentary film The Audition.

Mr. Hanscom earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Northwestern University. He is also an alumnus of many of the nations premier training programs, including those of Santa Fe Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, and Central City Opera, as well as Wolf Trap Opera’s Filene Young Artist Program, Opera Theatre of St. Louis’s Gerdine Young Artist Program, the Merola Opera Program, and Sarasota Opera Studio.
